A restaurant POS app for Android turns a phone or tablet into a billing counter: it takes orders, sends KOTs, prints GST bills to a thermal printer and records UPI, card and cash payments. A tablet suits the main counter, phones suit captains and small counters, and a good app keeps billing offline and syncs later. Install it only from the Play Store or the vendor's official link.
Android devices are affordable, easy to replace and familiar to most staff, which is why so many Indian restaurants bill on them. For how the app fits into a complete POS setup, see our restaurant POS system guide.
Phone, tablet or terminal?
| Device | Best for | Strength | Limitation |
|---|---|---|---|
| Android phone | Small counters, kiosks, food trucks, captains | Pocket-sized, cheap or already owned | Small screen for big menus; needs a separate printer |
| Android tablet (8–11 inch) | Cafés and small restaurant counters | Bigger screen, still affordable and portable | Needs a stand and a separate printer |
| Android all-in-one POS terminal | Busy QSR and restaurant counters | Large touch screen with built-in printer | Higher cost; fixed at the counter |
| Android handheld with printer | Table-side billing, outdoor seating, queues | Prints bills anywhere | 58 mm paper; battery to manage |

What a restaurant POS app must do
- GST billing with the right tax by order type, and a compliant bill format.
- Fast item search, favourites and modifiers that fit a small screen.
- Printing to Bluetooth, USB and network printers.
- KOT routing to kitchen stations or a kitchen display.
- Table management and captain ordering on the same app.
- UPI, card and cash payments, with split bills.
- Offline billing that syncs when the internet returns.
- Separate staff logins with permissions for voids and discounts.
- Cloud sync, so owners see reports on their own phone.

Printing from Android
| Connection | Typical printer | How to set it up |
|---|---|---|
| Bluetooth | 58 mm (and some 80 mm) portable printers | Pair once in Android settings, then select the printer in the POS app. |
| USB (OTG) | 80 mm counter printers | Use a USB OTG cable or a tablet with a full-size USB port; check the app supports it. |
| LAN or Wi-Fi | Kitchen KOT printers shared by many devices | Give the printer a fixed IP address and add it in the app by that address. |
Always print a test bill (check GSTIN and the tax split) and a test KOT before your first service.
Choosing an Android device for billing
- Use a recent Android version that still gets security updates; very old devices slow down and may not run current apps.
- Pick a screen size for the job: 10–11 inch for the counter, a phone for captains.
- Check battery life for devices that move around the floor.
- Use a stand, case or mount to protect against drops and spills.
- Dedicate the device to the POS: no personal apps or social media, and a screen lock.
Install safely
Download your POS app only from the Google Play Store or the vendor's official link. Sites offering a "free full version" or modified APK of paid POS software are a common source of malware, and pirated apps never get updates or GST changes. Our guide to free restaurant POS software covers genuinely free options instead.
App or browser?
On Android, an installed app usually handles printers, offline billing and speed better than a web browser. Many POS systems also have a web dashboard for owners and managers. Our guide to cloud vs offline restaurant POS explains how sync and offline mode work.
Set up in an afternoon
- Install the app and log in with your restaurant account.
- Add your menu, prices, categories and GST settings.
- Pair or add your bill and KOT printers, and print test copies.
- Create a login for each staff member with the right permissions.
- Set up tables if you serve dine-in.
- Switch Wi-Fi off and bill a test order to check offline mode.
- Train staff in a short session, then go live on a quiet shift.
Frequently asked questions
Can I run restaurant billing on an Android phone?
Yes. A restaurant POS app on an Android phone can take orders, print GST bills to a Bluetooth thermal printer, send KOTs and record UPI, card and cash payments. It suits small counters, kiosks and food trucks; busier counters usually move to a tablet or an all-in-one terminal.
Which printer works with an Android POS app?
Most apps support Bluetooth thermal printers for portable setups, USB printers through an OTG cable, and LAN or Wi-Fi printers for the kitchen. Check your app's supported printer list before buying, and test a bill and a KOT before go-live.
Is it safe to download a restaurant POS APK from a website?
Only from the vendor's official link or the Google Play Store. Modified or "free full version" APKs from unknown sites can carry malware, steal sales and customer data, and never receive updates or GST changes.
Does an Android POS app work offline?
Some do and some don't. A good Android POS keeps billing and KOTs working during internet outages and syncs when the connection returns. Ask the vendor exactly what works offline and test it with Wi-Fi switched off.
Phone or tablet: which is better for a restaurant POS?
A tablet is better for the main billing counter because the bigger screen makes item search and table views faster. Phones are ideal for captains taking orders at the table and for very small counters.
